Water is warming, levels are rising, and fish are biting almost as well as the mosquitos, must be early June. Kabetogama is drying off a little after a wet and windy week if you were up here. Winds of 20-30 mph+ made many of us hide or stay off the water last week, but 70 forecasts with chance of rain and water temperatures in the high 50's-low 60's should trigger more aggressive fishing in the next week or two.
Walleye bite: I think this could be all over the board. Many anglers are finding fish in shallow, especially for the evening bite (7-8:30p). Small jigs, lindy rigs, slip bobbers have all produced lately. Leeches I would say are the next bit thing. Typically, we have an early minnow phase that transitions into a leech bite and that for me has just started, so try some leeches this week. Jig and minnow in 24-32 feet has been really solid the past few days. Many anglers are finding a variety of big fish, keeper fish, and a few small fish in deeper water off of points or rocky structure near islands. Saugers have been biting in these spots as well, and seems they can rarely pass on a jig and minnow.
Smallmouth are still pre-spawn and seem to be in 5-15 feet. The bass we are occasionally catching have been fat and feisty. Pitching jigs and plastics, jigs and minnows, and Im sure you can find a few with a slip bobber and leech.
Pike fishing has been fairly steady for quantity. Casting stick baits or twister tails has been fairly steady. Shoreline and warmer water bays have been the best for me, as the weed lines and weeds are not yet growing to much (good for us walleye anglers)
Crappie fishing has seemed to slow for the few that were targeting them. Shallow water spawning areas were the target last week, but they were a little harder to find for me in the past few days. Try back bays or deep channels with weed lines if you're searching this week.
As always, send me a text or emaily and I'll try to keep you on fish all week
